More Than a Game: How Sport Shapes Character

October 7, 2026 · hepsia

On a Saturday morning, a football pitch can do something a classroom sometimes cannot. It gives a boy somewhere to be, a team that is counting on him and a coach who notices whether he showed up. That is why sports development is one of Boy Child Care Kenya’s core programs.

Why sport matters

Idle time is one of the biggest risks facing boys and young men. Without structure, it is easy to drift towards bad company, alcohol and drugs. Sport fills that time with something positive: training, matches, friendships and goals worth working for.

But for us, sport is never only about the game. Every session is a chance to build the things a boy will need for life:

  • Discipline — turning up on time, training when it is hard, respecting the rules.
  • Teamwork — learning that the team wins together and loses together.
  • Resilience — handling defeat, getting back up and trying again.
  • Belonging — knowing there are people who expect to see you next week.

The huddle is where a lot of mentoring happens.

More than football

Football is the heart of our sports program, but the boys we walk with also swim, run, cycle and play table tennis. Whatever the sport, the coach and the mentor are often the same person — someone who cares as much about how a boy is doing at home and in school as about his performance on the field.

Help keep a boy in the game

Kits, balls, transport to matches and tournament fees all add up. A gift towards our sports program keeps boys active and connected to mentors who believe in them. Support our sports program.
